Re: Grading info on coins - one person's opinion
Here's my 0.02 cents based on experience :
#1 is PCGS - very few dealers will ever argue or even mention 'mis-grades' and often PCGS command full value + a small percentage above that. #2 is NGC - few dealers will dispute coins graded by this service and an NGC coin usually commands full value. ANY and I do many ANY of the others are 'suspect' with ANACS and ICG being 'fuzzy' at best. All too often I've seen and mistakenly purchased coins that are a whole grade 'lower' than what's shown. SEGS - is by far the worst and the lowest in consistency. The old adage goes - "buy the coin not the holder"..... Although the article does prove something - dealers won't try to rob you on a 'slabbed' or graded coin - but a 'raw' coin is a whole different story. |

BTW - to add to it I forgot to mention something.....
"NTC" - this is one of the newest on the market for slabbed / graded coins. Often an MS-66 or MS-67 coin is usually a whole 2-grades lower than what is labeled. Just look on eBay and see what I'm talking about. You'll find the NTC coins in MS-66 sell the same as a PCGS MS-64 and there's a reason for it. Sure, if you want bragging rights, by all means buy an NTC MS-67 but just remember that it's probably an MS-65 (or less) so I wouldn't fork over hundreds thinking you're getting the deal of the century. FWIW - just my honest opinion from an experienced numismatist. |
